Bryce and Louise Roxburgh purchased this large five-acre country garden in 2012. They were fortunate that the previous owners had been dedicated gardeners and had planted many trees (now mature), which enhance the beauty of the property.
There are so many beautiful trees, including ones round the dam: Chinese Elm (Ulmus parvifolia), the Sweet Chestnut (Castanea sativa), Silver Birch (Betula pendula), the Ginkgo (Ginkgo biloba), Japanese Elm (Zelkova serrata), Tupelo (Nyssa sylvatica), Tulip Tree (Liriodendron tulipifera), Dawn Redwood (Metasequoia glyptostroboides), Beech (Fagus sp) and many oaks (Quercus sp) and maples.
Louise’s gardening philosophy is based on a love of roses and flowers for picking. Bryce’s sister, Liz Roxburgh, designed the new parterre located between the house and the dam, featuring Buxus hedges in a Celtic pattern with Meidiland carpet roses set in white gravel—these roses boast larger flowers compared with other ground cover roses. The lovely parterre-style rose garden and garden beds full of striking perennials is a delight.
There is an orchard with over eighty fruit trees and a vegetable garden. Three years ago the tennis court and pavilion were constructed, the fence clad with Meidiland climbing roses with their deep glossy-green leaves.
Thirty-six conifers were removed from the southern side of the house and this allowed for the development of a new garden featuring Rhododendrons and Pieris. The garden to the left of the entrance driveway was developed to include massed lavender and hardy perennials intersected by gravel paths. The copper beech in the centre was transplanted from the tennis court site. It is a very beautiful country garden to visit.
