The late Paul Ramsay AO, businessman and philanthropist, died in 2014, having lived at Yarrawin from the age of two. His father purchased the property, formerly a guesthouse, in 1938; Paul and his siblings enjoyed the four hectares of the rambling garden throughout their childhood, returning for holidays when they were at school in Sydney.
The garden is imbued with happy family memories and Ramsey left the property to his family and friends for their continuing enjoyment. Two years prior to his death Paul Ramsay employed Tim Pollard as head gardener and property manager; together they began to plan the redevelopment of the garden. The present rejuvenated garden has emerged full of colour and diverse plants.
What was formerly dominated by pines and eucalyptus now has the feel of an English garden. Gracious lawns are surrounded by exotic and eucalyptus trees under-planted with a range of flowering perennials and shrubs. The result is a relaxing stroll garden with asymmetrical plantings and meandering pathways—here and there are touches of formality with clipped Buxus hedges and a French fountain. There are beautiful lawns, including a croquet lawn with curved edges— a delightful garden in all seasons.
